In a move to restore discipline and productivity within the local government system, the Sole Administrator of Degema Local Government Area, Dr. Sokari Ibifuro Francis, has sounded a stern warning to council staff over what he described as a “disturbing” culture of absenteeism, tardiness, and apathy towards work.
During a critical engagement with the council workforce on Monday, 17th June 2025, Dr. Sokari revealed that a shocking audit of departmental and unit attendance showed only 18 staff members out of over 700 reported for duty. He described the trend as unacceptable and promised to implement strict measures to combat the decline in work ethics.
To this end, the administrator announced the impending enforcement of a “no work, no pay” policy”, affirming that staff who fail to report for duty consistently will face disciplinary action. He lamented the steady erosion of service values among workers and pledged that his administration would no longer tolerate indifference to official responsibilities.
While emphasizing accountability, Dr. Sokari also assured that committed employees will be recognized through reward systems that encourage punctuality, dedication, and job performance.
In a separate development, the council administrator unveiled plans for a monthly environmental sanitation exercise across Degema LGA. Highlighting the importance of cleanliness in safeguarding public health, he urged residents to embrace the initiative as a collective responsibility. “We are promoting a culture of environmental sustainability that will enhance the well-being of our people,” he stated, noting that the commencement date will be communicated shortly.
