In a move to bolster education in the local government area (LGA), the Sole Administrator of Degema Local Government Area, Dr. Sokari Ibifuro Francis, a former Principal and a University Don before his current call to service, has convened a meeting with zonal directors, principals, and heads of schools on Monday, the 28th of April 2025, at the Council Secretariat, Degema, to address the pressing concerns within the educational sector.
During the meeting, the Sole Administrator reiterated his administration's commitment to prioritizing education, pledging to provide the necessary learning materials required by students and pupils across the local government area. He announced the rollout of a 'back-to-school' programme aimed at addressing the issue of out-of-school children in the LGA.
Recognizing the infrastructure challenges faced by schools, Dr. Francis promised to construct additional buildings to assist the schools within the area, if the LGA has sufficient funds, in order to address the shortage of learning spaces and dilapidated classrooms that have hindered effective learning.
In his bid towards addressing security concerns, the Sole Administrator vowed to engage with the Rivers State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Coordinator and the traditional leadership in Bakana community to address the harassment of corps members deployed to the community. He noted that the issue had previously led to the withdrawal of corps members, placing additional strain on the teaching staff. Dr. Francis pledged to tackle this menace and provide adequate security within and outside the schools in the area.
The meeting was met with appreciation from the zonal coordinators, principals, and heads of schools, who commended the Sole Administrator's efforts to address the challenges facing the educational sector. Concerns were raised over teacher shortages, insecurity, and dilapidated infrastructure, which the Sole Administrator promised to address through his upcoming initiatives.
This strategic move by the Delga Sole Administrator underscores his commitment to transforming the educational landscape and ensuring a conducive learning environment for the students and teachers in the region.
