In a recent development, Dr. Sokari, the Sole Administrator of Degema Local Government Area in Rivers State, has called upon the Bakana Boat Drivers Association to consider lowering transportation costs for teachers and National Youth Service Corps participants stationed in the Bakana community. The appeal was formally addressed on Monday, 5th May 2025, during a meeting at the council secretariat.
Emphasizing the commitment of his administration to facilitate the reassignment of Corps members back to Bakana following a recent unfortunate incident that necessitated their removal, the DELGA Sole Administrator highlighted the importance of having Corps members present in local schools to help alleviate the workload for teachers.
Furthermore, Dr. Sokari, the Sole Administrator of the LGA, provided counsel to the boat drivers, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety and security in their operations. He confirmed that all necessary measures would be taken within the confines of the law to ensure the protection of the waterways.
In response to this appeal, Mr. George Braide, the chairman of the Bakana Boat Drivers Association, expressed gratitude for the intervention of the DELGA Sole Administrator. He indicated that the association would convene with its members to discuss the matter and subsequently communicate their decision to the council.
