In a bid to address the persistent denial of treatment and care to victims of gunshot wounds and other emergencies, the Senate Committee Chairman on Health, Dr. Ipalibo Banigo, has stated that there is an urgent need to improve the emergency preparedness and response plan in hospitals across Nigeria.

Following an investigative hearing on the matter, as well as the need to ensure compliance with the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017, and the urgent need to end the nationwide strikes by resident doctors, the committee embarked on an oversight visit to the Maitama General Hospital in Abuja.

During the visit, the committee aimed to ascertain the events that transpired when Greatness Olorunfemi, a victim of a criminal act commonly referred to as "one chance," was brought to the hospital.

Dr. Banigo expressed gratitude to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, for promptly setting up a committee to investigate the incident. This swift response serves as an indication of our commitment to ensuring accountability and quality healthcare delivery.

The chairman emphasised the urgent necessity of revamping the healthcare sector to provide better and more accessible healthcare services nationwide. As part of this effort, the Senate Committee on Health will prioritise the thorough revitalization of healthcare facilities in the country.

Additionally, Dr. Banigo stated that improving the emergency preparedness and response plan in hospitals is crucial. The committee will work towards implementing measures that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency services in healthcare facilities across Nigeria.

With these measures in place, it is hoped that the denial of treatment and care, especially to victims of gunshot wounds and other emergencies, will be effectively addressed. The Senate Committee on Health remains committed to improving healthcare services in Nigeria and ensuring that every citizen has access to quality care in times of need.
