A tragic incident unfolded early Sunday morning as a boat carrying numerous individuals, including women and children, capsized on the River Niger. Passers-by witnessed the distressing event and quickly initiated rescue efforts near the banks of Onitsha. A video capturing the incident has since gone viral on social media platforms.
While an official count of casualties has yet to be determined at the time of this report, it was discovered that the passengers hail from Kogi State. The Anambra State Police spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, has confirmed the incident and assured that the situation is under control. He stated, "Our marine operatives responded swiftly upon receiving the distress call. We managed to rescue over 30 survivors and recover the bodies of five individuals from the depths of the sea and the overturned boat."
Preliminary investigations suggest that the boat was transporting both goods and passengers from Kogi State before the unfortunate incident occurred. The exact cause of the capsizing is currently unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
