The N800 billion 2024 budget signed into law by Rivers State Governor Simi Fubara has been declared illegal by the Court.
On January 22, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja nullified the budget, ruling that the faction of the state House of Assembly that passed the bill was unconstitutionally constituted and not recognized by law.
Governor Fubara presented the N800 billion 2024 Appropriation Bill to a faction of the state House of Assembly consisting of four lawmakers in December. After the budget was passed by these lawmakers, Fubara proceeded to sign it into law.
However, Judge James Omotosho, presiding over the case, declared that all actions carried out by the four lawmakers were invalid. The court also acknowledged Amaewhule as the speaker of the state assembly.
