Activities of Sea Pirates and Kidnappers are no longer a new trend within the Namasibi axis of the New Calabar Rivers of the Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State. Despite the dangerous nature of the Namasibi river, many communities cannot escape using its route to and fro their community since it is the only available route. That is the situation of the people of Ke Community.
A Few days after a pirate attack, this is yet another deadly attack by dogs of the underworld. Persons suspected to be sea pirates, on Wednesday 3rd June, 2020 afternoon, hijacked a passenger boat, faring Port Harcourt to Ke Town in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Our Correspondent learnt that the fully armed sea pirates attacked the passenger boat around Nama Sibi of the New Calabar River and ordered passengers and driver to jump into the river. A passenger and her child who claimed they cannot swim was taken away by the sea pirates to an unknown destination.
Speaking to us, Tamunoiminabo Aginah, the driver of the hijacked boat said;
“In the morning when we were driving to Port Harcourt, the sea pirates chased us but they couldn’t get to us. On Our way back to Ke from Port Harcourt as we approached Namasibi, New Calabar River, the sea pirates appeared in full speed and a superior engine boat and we couldn’t escape them. “
“They ordered us to jump into the river. Those that can swim did as they commanded while they drove away with those that didn’t jump into the river to unknown destination together with our boat.”
“We were rescued by fishermen with hand pulling boats” – Aginah added.
