The acting chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalist, Rivers State chapter Comrade Uche Agbam, at the 2018 Press week/ World press freedom day which was held at the NUJ state Secretariat moscow road, Port Harcourt, advised practicing journalists in the state and In the country at large, to ensure they carry out their duties professionally and with the ethics guiding the profession, she said by so doing, journalists will discharge their responsibilities effectively.
She added, that the freedom been giving to journalists in the state and in the country at large to discharge their duties is below average and that there is no room for improvement to ensure that journalists practicing in the state and in Nigeria have the freedom to do so and discharge their responsibilities  because of environmental challenges.

She also called on government to recognize that journalists are partners with them in the development of society and should be treated as such, that by so doing, government will ensure a conducive environment and protect journalist from all forms of intimidations, harassment and all those acts that are inimical to human living.

In curbing quarks, in journalism profession in the country, the chairman stated that " there is an ongoing biometrics by the national bodies of NUJ. A biometrics where practicing journalists in each state of the country will be fully registered and captured, if you are qualified, you will be issued an ID card to enable you practice effectively.

Continuing, she stated " if you want to become a journalist, first you must have a prerequisite qualification, that is you must have a degree in mass communication or a diploma in mass communication or in journalism. But you must have the prerequisite qualification in line with what you want to do. Also, you must belong to a media house. If you want to freelance, freelance; but know what the implications are as a freelancer. But if you want to be a journalist, then you must have your qualifications and you must be practicing for a media house.
