The Care Development Center  (a health based non governmental organisation ) in partnership with the  Nigeria Women Medical Association, Rivers State branch and the Rivers State Ministry of Health had organised a sensitization and enlightenment rally at the Woji slaughter market in port harcourt to commemorate this years Africa vaccine week and also mark world meningitis day.

Speaking to newsmen, Mrs Omorede Rhoda Omoele, the executive director, Care and Development Center, Rivers State said the idea for holding this year's rally at woji slaughter market is to reach out to a good number of persons from different class, as well as the traders, to sensitize and educate them on the need for uptake of vaccine and completion of the vaccine as well as to increase awareness on the reality of meningitis.
Mrs. Omoele said " although meningitis is not a serious issue in Rivers State, but prevalent in the northern part of the country, though there is pocket of it occurring here and there, so in view of this, there's need to sensitize the people to have an understanding of the reality of this disease in Rivers State.
Continuing, she said that there are different kinds of meningitis, there's the bacteria meningitis, the fungi meningitis and the viral meningitis. She stated, meningitis is not limited to any age, it can affect any one no matter your age (either old or young).
She said the signs and symptoms of meningitis are stiffness of the neck, irritation to light. She also advised women to avail themselves to be vaccinated against cervical cancer, and warned that they should not take the information for granted. She also used the medium to encourage parents immunize their kids,  and always make sure their kids complete their immunizations when they start. 

Also, Ibifuro Ben-Green, from the health education unit/ public health, from the Rivers State ministry of health lauded the response from the market people,in the way and manner they embraced the sensitization exercise. She also expressed her disappointment in the manner with which parents hold back their kids from being vaccinated, she therefore used the medium to encourage parents to always avail their kids for vaccinations against killer diseases and to also complete vaccinations when they start.
She said " she said meningitis is a a disease prevalent in the northern part of Nigeria, but because of the migration of people from the north to Rivers State, she disclosed that there are few cases of meningitis in Rivers State and advised that residents in Rivers State should be righteous in being vaccinated against meningitis and other killer diseases. She also advised that residents should always take proper bath to stay clean, to also keep there environment clean and desist from sleeping in clusters in a non ventilated room as this can promote meningitis.
On her part, Dr. Ufuoma Edewor, secretary and state coordinatorcoodin of the Rivers State branch of Nigeria Women Medical Association, stressed the need for parents and guidance to vaccinate children, especially from age five down, as children in this age bracket, their immune system is not fully developed and as this will also help reduce the mortality rate of kids who die of this six childhood killer diseases that their vaccinations are available like pneumonia, tuberculosis, hepatitis, yellow fever, measles etc, she said that this diseases are vaccine preventable diseases.
She encouraged parents against fears and myth surrounding vaccinations and advised they taken uptake and complete their kids vaccinations. She also added that the benefits of vaccination far outweighs the fears and advised parents  to visit government owned primary health center or government hospitals for verification and vaccination.
