Gov. Wike has lost the moral grounds to contest for a 2nd term in office - Sotonye Ijuye-Dagogo

Recently, Governor Nyesom Wike in response to questions from The Sun Newspaper editors said that he did not plan to be governor of Rivers State because he knew that it was improper for him to have aspired to succeed his fellow Ikwerre man, Rotimi Amaechi in 2015.

He said " I can tell you that I never planned to be governor. What happened was that, at the time, I was a minister, we had crisis in our party. When the former governor left our party to join APC, there was a vacuum. So we asked what are we going to do? How are we going to get to make sure we retained the power? So, we jettisoned zoning. We said look, we cannot talk about zoning when we don't have anything on hand. So let's get somebody we think can take this work and get us the victory. And that was how I emerged. There was never a time I dreamt of being governor".

Governor Wike has also been quoted severally as saying that he emerged as the flagbearer of PDP in 2015 because the party couldn’t find anybody to defend Dr. Goodluck Jonathan against the onslaught of former Governor Amaechi and ensure victory for the former President in Rivers State - a reason that has been described as flimsy, untenable and an insult on Rivers people. Even Rivers Ijaw people have rejected that insinuation, saying that Wike derives his strength from Rivers Ijaw political leaders, activists, ex-militants and cultists.

Nyesom Wike insinuates that he was called upon by his Ikwerre kinsmen to contest the 2015 governorship election because according to them, former Governor Rotimi Amaechi did nothing for Ikwerre people and he (Wike) was persuaded to come and correct Amaechi’s neglect of Ikwerre.

It is the height of depravity for a sitting Governor to look Rivers people straight in the face and reel out such glaring falsehood. These statements on why and how Governor Wike became Governor are stranger than fiction.

If Wike did not plan to be governor, why did he seize the PDP from Chief G.U. Ake and install his crony, Felix Obuah? If in truth Wike never planned to be governor, why then did he establish the GDI to usurped the PDP? If truly Wike never wanted to be governor, why did he use federal might to frustrate former Governor Amaechi out of the PDP? Why the bloodshed that has engulfed the state since 2013?

As false as Wike’s claims are, some issues are deducible from them:

1. That the PDP temporarily suspended zoning and offered him (Wike) the governorship ticket that he shouldn’t have gotten under normal circumstances.

2. That the PDP “jettisoned zoning” in 2015 as a strategy to regain the governorship seat.

3. That Wike tried to appealed to the sentiments of Ikwerre people, who are generally fair-minded and would ordinarily oppose such inordinate ambition.

It follows from the above that once the situation becomes normal and PDP regains power in the state, there would be no further reason to suspend zoning and no further reason for Wike to remain in office.

The President Jonathan’s re-election bid under which guise Nyesom Wike grabbed the PDP governorship ticket, failed and Wike has no more excuse, no matter how flimsy, to hold on to power.

The factors that were orchestrated to foist Wike on Rivers people no more exist, Governor Wike therefore has lost the right, moral and otherwise, to contest for a second term in 2019. If the PDP cannot find a capable governorship candidate outside Ikwerre in 2019, what is the guaranty that it would in 2023? This deceit must have to end.

Like Mao Nangi O. says “It is glaring that the salacious lies titivated by the Governor and his men during the 2015 guber campaigns will not work for them in 2019. It appears the people are now more conscious and Rivers people are beginning to recover fully from the sedative these guys injected into the system in 2015. Governor Wike should wake up and smell the coffee before it becomes late… The people eye don clear, GEJ is not in the race, so he cannot be the issue for 2019 campaigns”.
