Oha Soup is one of the native soup of the Eastern part of Nigeria. This soup is similar with Bitter-leaf (Onogbu soup) and can be cooked with Achi, Ofo, Flour, Coco-yam as the thickener. Oha leaf is seasonal so this makes people love it so much.


Oha Recipe

Cocoyam         6 small

Oha Leaf         1 bunch

Red Oil            2 Cooking Spoon

Seasoning cubes   2

Ogiri                1teaspoon

Assorted Beef :  Instestine, Liver, shaki

 Dry Fish, Mangala and Stock Fish


Chili Pepper, Salt and Crayfish (to taste)


Procedure in Preparation of Oha Soup
1.    Grind the Crayfish and Pepper and set aside.

2.    Wash and boil the Cocoyam till soft. Remove the backs and use a mortar  to pound to a smooth paste.
3.    Use your hands, cut the  (Oha) leaves into tiny pieces.
         Ogiri  is optional, it gives Oha Soup a traditional taste.


Method Of Cooking
1.    Wash and marinate the intestine,liver, shaki , stock fish and dry fish with salt,pepper,onions,seasoning cube  place on the fire allow to steam then add 1 litre of water till they are well done. .
2.    Add the pepper, ogiri  and ground crayfish and cook for 10 minutes. Add the Coco-yam paste in small lumps and then the palm oil.
3.    Cover the pot half  and leave to cook on high heat till all the Coco-yam lumps have dissolved. You can add more water if you feel that the soup is too thick.
4.    Add the  Oha leaves and allow to cook for about 5 minutes.
1.5.    Add salt to taste, stir and the soup is ready!
